What are the charges if a direct debit is rejected?
Because it can happen to anyone, we don't charge a fee for the first rejected direct debit, and we do this every quarter.
For each quarter, the first chargeback is free of charge, and subsequent chargebacks are €10 each.
That's 4 free direct debits a year, or 1 per quarter:
- 1st quarter: January to March
- 2nd quarter: April to June
- 3rd quarter: July to September
- 4th quarter: October to December
If, at the time of debiting, your balance is less than the amount of the charges you owe, Nickel will debit part of these charges (i.e. the amount of your balance) and then the remainder due as soon as your account has been funded.
For example: if you owe €10 in rejection fees but your balance is €7, Nickel will deduct €7 in partial fees. You will still owe Nickel €3, which will be deducted thereafter.
From 1 July 2023, a charge will be made for each direct debit rejected, from the first time it is rejected.
I'm financially vulnerable or over-indebted: will I pay direct debit rejection fees?
If you are in a precarious financial situation, direct debit rejection charges are capped at €20 per month.
If you are over-indebted and your case has been declared admissible by the Banque de France: there are no more direct debit rejection or seizure fees for you for a period of 2 years.
